Can anyone be hypnotised?
Yes, but only if they want to be. The only requirement is to work in co-operation with the therapist and have an understanding of what they need to do in order to achieve the hypnotic state. The degree of hypnosis varies from person to person. Most therapy sessions do not require more than a light trance state which everyone can easily achieve with gentle guidance from the therapist.

What if I can't be hypnotised?
The only people who cannot be hypnotised are those who are drunk or those who simply don't want to be hypnotised! You cannot be made to do anything you don't want to do, so if you simply don't want to be hypnotised you won't be. Indeed, as you have got to this page this probably does not apply to you. Being hypnotised may feel different to how you expect it to feel, but that does not mean you are not in hypnosis.

Is it safe? Are there any side effects?
Yes it is completely safe, the only side effects are positive, beneficial ones! It is using the natural power of the mind to resolve unwanted habits or behaviour or relieve symptoms without the need for tablets or drugs. It is non-addictive and completely safe without any unpleasant or unwanted side effects.

Will I be in control and know what is going on?
Yes all the time. You do not go 'out', 'under' or 'to sleep'. You are not unconscious. You can hear and understand everything that is being said. Nothing happens without your consent. You can remain in an extremely relaxed state knowing that you have absolute control.

Will I remember what happens during sessions?
99% of people remember everything they or the therapist said during the session. Occasionally the therapist may need to remind them of one or two points that can trigger the rest of the memory. It is possible for therapists to give post hypnotic suggestions to forget what was said however this is rarely used in therapy.

Will my mind be interfered with, will I be made to divulge my deepest darkest secrets, or would I be made to cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog?
You cannot be made to do anything that you do not think is acceptable. You would either reject the suggestion or come out of the hypnotic trance. Your deepest darkest secrets will remain precisely that!

Could I stay stuck in one position or never come out of it?
The trance state can be terminated at any time you choose just as you chose to enter it. If you were left in a trance state either by the therapist or by hypnotic tape/CD you would return to full consciousness on your own, in your own time or enter a natural sleep and awaken after a short, pleasant nap.

How many sessions will I need and how long are they?
Simple problems like smoking may take as little as one or possibly two sessions. More deeply routed problems will require more sessions (usually 2 to 6). What is important to remember is that each individual is different and therefore the number of sessions will vary. Each session lasts approximately 1 hour.

Will the therapist have to touch me?
In the use of certain techniques it may be necessary to touch a client on the wrist, shoulder, hand, neck or forehead, to test for full relaxation or to assist you into a deeper state of hypnosis. Permission to do this will be sought before any trance work commences.

Can children be hypnotised?
Yes, usually from about age 6, provided they can understand what is being said, are intelligent and imaginative. Younger children benefit from the relaxation. Did you know that in 1981 self hypnosis was introduced into the national curriculum in Sweden and indeed can improve learning and study habits.

What will it cost me?
You should expect fees to be on a level with any other professional person that you might wish to consult. My fees are £70 for single session (duration 1 hour) and £130 for double session (duration 2 hours) although if the session should overun the agreed timings for whatever reason, you will not be charged extra. You may wish to consider the fees to be an investment in yourself - after all, you're worth it aren't you.

What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is simply an altered state of awareness making use of the 'alpha' state. The state that you enter perhaps when daydreaming, or just before you fall asleep - a state of relaxation, peace and calm.

Hypnotherapy is a means of making use of this altered state of awareness to enable a therapeutic change, in other words, changing an unwanted habit or other area of an individuals behaviour that they want to get rid of.
